Indian Railways has reached a historic milestone—100 years of electrification—marking its journey from the first electric train in 1925 to nearly full electrification today.
As of January 1, 2025, 97.06% of the broad gauge network is electrified, covering 64,547 route kilometers. This makes India’s railway system one of the most electrified in the world, surpassing countries like China (75%) and Russia (51%).
With the final phase of electrification underway, India is set to become the first country with a fully electrified railway network, reducing its reliance on fossil fuels and reinforcing its commitment to sustainable transportation.
Switching from diesel to electricity is transforming India’s railways. Nearly 100% electrification by 2026 will mean lower emissions, reduced costs, and more efficient train operations.
Electric trains are faster, cheaper to maintain, and more reliable. This shift also strengthens India’s energy security by reducing dependence on imported fuels while boosting the country’s growing renewable energy sector.
Only a few heritage and tourist rail lines remain unelectrified, but they don’t affect the big picture. By next year, Indian Railways will be fully electric.
The government is also investing in solar and wind energy to power the rail network sustainably. The 100th anniversary of railway electrification, celebrated on February 3, 2025, marks a major milestone in India’s journey toward a cleaner, more sustainable transport system.
