On Saturday, March 22nd, at 8:30 PM (local time), millions of people around the world will turn off their lights for Earth Hour, a global show of support for the planet. From the Eiffel Tower to the Empire State Building, cities will go dark as individuals, businesses, and communities take part in one of the world’s largest environmental movements.
Launched in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, Earth Hour is now in its 19th year, bringing together over 180 countries and territories. While the event lasts just 60 minutes, its impact goes beyond turning off the lights—it’s about dedicating one hour to the planet by doing something meaningful and sustainable.
Whether it’s spending time outdoors, cleaning up a local park, or simply reflecting on how to reduce your footprint, Earth Hour encourages everyone to take action in their own way. Last year, people collectively gave over 1.4 million hours to the planet, uniting families, friends, and communities in a shared commitment to a better future.
🌍 Go Dark, Go Outside – Turn off your lights and step outside. Whether it's a walk in your neighborhood, sitting in your backyard, or visiting a park, take this hour to appreciate the natural world without distractions.
📵 One Hour, No Screens – Power down your devices completely. No phone, no TV, no scrolling—just one hour disconnected from the digital world to reduce energy consumption and be more present.
🥦 Plan a Sustainable Week – Use Earth Hour to map out small but impactful changes you can make in the coming week—meal planning with plant-based options, committing to reducing waste, or setting a goal to drive less.
♻️ Declutter for the Planet – Take an hour to clean up your digital or physical space in an eco-friendly way. Delete old emails and files to reduce data storage energy use, or sort out old clothes and items to donate instead of throwing them away.
🌱 Plant Something Green – Whether it’s in your backyard, on your balcony, or even a small herb garden in your kitchen, use this hour to plant something that will contribute to cleaner air and literally make your life greener. 🪴
🕯️ Candlelit Dinner with a Green Twist – Gather family or friends for a meal by candlelight. Enjoy good food, good conversations, and maybe even sneak in a discussion about small ways to live more sustainably.
Turning off the lights is a symbolic start, but the real impact comes from what happens next. Earth Hour is a chance to reflect on our daily habits and commit to sustainable changes that last far beyond one night.
When the lights come back on, what will you do next?
